Personal Trainer
Tony Appleton
Personal Trainer | Marylebone
My journey into fitness started over 30 years ago, after playing professional football until I was 16 and briefly considering careers in PE teaching and graphic design. I trained through the YMCA and went on to complete a Personal Training Qualification with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), re-qualifying three times over the decades as the industry evolved from "fitness instructor" to Level 3 Personal Trainer.
I spent years in gym management, and later moved into teaching and assessing other personal trainers, which is where my approach really took shape. Training the trainers means I've had to understand and explain the why behind every movement, not just count repetitions, and that's the perspective I bring to every session.
My philosophy comes down to balancing what a client wants with what they actually need. I prioritise movement integrity and technique over heavy loading. I won't put an older client under a barbell or into a squat if their biomechanics can't support it safely. Strength and mobility are what drive long-term health and bone density, and I like to think I'm a living example of that: still training, still mobile, still performing.
